I'm not saying that US soldiers haven't died for freedom, but unfortunately the ones in Iraq aren't dying for it - because the Iraqis certainly don't seem to think they're being helped by our presence, and the war has made America even more vunerable to terrorist attack than it was before. I'm not undermining the price our soldiers pay, nor am I taking away what they have done in the past. It's no fault of the troops that they've been sent overseas for no good reason. It's the administration's fault. I have nothing but respect and concern for our troops, and I hope they come home safely, and soon. I also have friends that are enlisted, and unfortunately, I don't know if they are currently well or not. Let's hope they are. And yes, UK soldiers are dying in Iraq as well. I wish them well too, because they were sent even though over 80% of the UK population opposed the war. But the soldiers still went, because that's what soldiers do: their duty to their country.

I hope your tour of duty goes safely. I'm not saying that the soldiers are not noble, or that they are wrong in some way, but it seems to me that in order to die for freedom one has to be doing something that somehow aids freedom, and the actions the US has taken in Iraq have, unfortunately, done little to help anyone. The soldiers are dying for their country, that is certain. It's just hard for me to see the actions of the army in Iraq as being "for freedom" because tens of thousands of innocent Iraqi civilians have died, many due to the US Military. Tell the families with a dead baby, brother, mother, etc. that it's for freedom. Know what I mean? I work with a ten-year-old half-Iraqi boy whose grandfather was killed by American soldiers in Baghdad. "He walked around a corner near his house and was shot by a tank." he told me last year "But I don't blame the soldiers, I blame George Bush." It was amazing, to me, that he knew enough to make the distinction - but how many children in Iraq are now being raised to hate America, because nobody teaches them the difference? Sadly, we're creating a whole new generation of potential terrorists due to our actions in Iraq and negatively impacting the west's safety as a result.

I don't doubt that you do understand and feel sorry for the people in Iraq that have lost loved ones.
Many people, including myself, have a lot of respect for you guys, who go and serve your country. You're doing a difficult job, and nobody that hasn't seen active service can really understand what it's like.
I, personally, don't think we're doing anything of value in Iraq, because the whole enterprise was misconceived and poorly run. Once again, not the fault of the soldiers, but the fault of the people in charge.
